Casket Letters Did They Implicate Mary Queen of Scots

Date:   found June 20, 1567, given to English  investigating commission on December 14, 1568 About the Casket Letters: In June, 1567, Mary, Queen of Scots, was captured by Scottish rebels at Carberry Hill. Six days later, as James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, claimed, his servants found a silver casket in the possession of a retainer of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. In the casket were eight letters and some sonnets. The letters were written in French. Contemporaries, and historians since, have disagreed as to their authenticity. One letter (if genuine) seems to back up the charge that Mary and Bothwell together planned the murder of Marys first husband, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, in February of 1567.   (Mary and Darnley were both grandchildren of Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII, first Tudor king of England, and sister of Henry VIII. Mary was the daughter of Margarets son James V by her first husband James IV, killed at Flodden. Darnleys mother was Margaret Douglas who was Margarets daughter by her second husband, Archibald Douglas.) Queen Mary and her husband (and first cousin) Lord Darnley were alienated already when he died in suspicious circumstances in Edinburgh on February 10, 1567.   Many people believed that the Earl of Bothwell had arranged for Darnley to be murdered.   When Mary and Bothwell married on May 15, 1567, suspicions of her complicity became stronger. A group of Scottish lords, led by Marys half-brother who was the Earl of Moray, rebelled against Marys rule.   She was captured on June 17, and forced to abdicate on July 24. The letters were supposedly discovered in June, and played a part in Marys agreement to abdicate.   In testimony in 1568, Morton told the story of the discovery of the letters. He claimed that a servant of George Dalgleish had confessed under threat of torture that hed been sent by his master, the Earl of Bothwell, to get a casket of letters from Edinburgh Castle, which Bothwell then intended to take out of Scotland.   These letters, Dalgliesh said Bothwell had told him, would reveal the ground of the cause of Darnleys death. But Dalgleish was captured by Morton and others and threatened with torture. He took them to a house in Edinburgh and, under a bed, the enemies of Mary found the silver box.   On it was engraved an F which was assumed to stand for Francis II of France, Marys late first husband. Morton then gave the letters to Moray and swore that he had not tampered with them. Marys son, James VI, was crowned on July 29, and Marys half-brother Moray, a leader of the rebellion, was appointed regent. The letters were presented to a Privy Council in December 1567, and  and a statement to Parliament to confirm the abdication described the letters as making it most certain that she was privy, art, and part in the actual devise of the murder of her lawful husband the King our sovereign lords father. Mary escaped in May 1568 and went to England. Queen Elizabeth I of England, cousin on Queen Mary, who had by then been informed of the content of the casket letters, ordered an investigation into Marys complicity in Darnleys murder. Moray personally brought the letters and showed them to Elizabeths officials. He appeared again in October 1568 at an investigation headed by the Duke of Norfolk, and produced them at Westminister on December 7. By December of 1568,  Mary was a prisoner of her cousin. Elizabeth, who found Mary an inconvenient competitor for the crown of England. Elizabeth appointed a commission to investigate the charges which Mary and the rebel Scottish lords levied against each other.  On December 14, 1568, the casket letters were given to the commissioners.   They had already been translated into the Gaelic used in Scotland, and the commissioners had them translated into English. The investigators compared the handwriting on the letters to the handwriting on letters Mary had sent to Elizabeth.   The English representatives in the inquiry declared the casket letters genuine.   Marys representatives were denied access to the letters. But the inquiry did not explicitly find Mary guilty of murder, leaving her fate open. The casket with its  contents were returned to Morton in Scotland.   Morton was himself executed in 1581. The casket letters disappeared a few years later. Some historians suspect that King James VI of Scotland (James I of England), son of Darnley and Mary, may have been responsible for the disappearance.   Thus, we only know the letters today in their copies. The letters were at the time subject to controversy. Were the casket letters forgeries or authentic? Their appearance was very convenient for the case against Mary. Morton was among the Scottish rebel lords who opposed the rule of Mary. Their case for removing Queen Mary and installing her infant son, James VI of Scotland, as ruler -- with the lords as de facto rulers during his minority -- was strengthened if these letters were genuine. That controversy continues today, and is unlikely to be resolved. In 1901, historian John Hungerford Pollen looked at the controversy.   He compared letters known to be genuinely written by Mary with the copies known of the casket letters. His conclusion was that there was no way to determine whether Mary was the original author of the casket letters. As historians still contend over Marys role in planning Darnleys murder, other more circumstantial evidence is weighed.

What s Wrong With Vocational School Essay - 1218 Words

As college has become more accessible over the past few years, more American students are being encouraged to attend. However, not everyone believes this is a benefit to society. Political scientist, Charles Murray, voices his controversial opinions in his paper entitled, What’s Wrong With Vocational School?. Murray argues the merits of non-traditional post-secondary education, such as vocational schools and technical colleges, while simultaneously condemning the results of the â€Å"false premium† placed on a college degree. He believes that due to the stigma surrounding tradesmen, many people are encouraged to attend college to â€Å"get a better job†, despite the fact that a degree promises no such thing. In the article, Murray makes the claim that many current attendees of college do not have a high enough IQ to truly benefit from the education, and many students that are intelligent don’t apply themselves to the cerebral demands of a traditional four year university. No data that I have been able to find tell us what proportion of those students really want four years of college-level courses, but it is safe to say that few people who are intellectually unqualified yearn for the experience, any more than someone who is athletically unqualified for a college varsity wants to have his shortcomings exposed at practice every day†¦ Large numbers of those who are intellectually qualified for college also do not yearn for four years of college-level courses. Error in the Financial Statements and Reporting Free Sample

Question: (1) When finalising the financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2014 two significant errors were made and there is debate as to whether we should simply adjust the financial statements in the current year or change last years financial statements as well. The IT system of the company was installed 3 years ago at a cost of approximately $3.5 million and was estimated to last 10 years. However the latest technology advancements indicate that this was a very optimistic estimate and that the maximum life span of this equipment will probably be not more than 6 years in total with little or no residual value. It was also discovered in August 2014 that a machine worth $2.2 million purchased in January 2014 was erroneously written off to repairs and maintenance instead of being capitalised. Deberella the marketing director thinks we should just adjust this years figures to account for these problems but Peter indicated that it was slightly more complicated than that. Could you please give us some advice on this? (2) A number of employees who work on our strategic management team have been with us for a number of years - at least 12 of them have been with us since the company commenced operations in 2006. In accordance with the Employee Bargaining Agreement (EBA) all employees are entitled to long service leave of 13 weeks if they remain in service for 10 years. They are also entitled to pro rata long service leave after 6 years of service. Our usual practice is to show the long service leave expense in the income statement when the employee actually takes leave and is paid. Of course we maintain a memorandum record of the number of days each employee is entitled to. Peter has indicated to us that he thinks we should consider treating this expense in a different manner, which seems complicated. The directors are wondering why we should complicate a very simple way of calculating long service leave why not stick with recognising the expense when we pay for it? What do you think we should do and why? (3) Peter, the new financial controller, has also informed the board that the company will need to present a statement of cash flows with the financial statements in addition to those statements already being presented, which really attracted a lot of attention. Some of the directors thought it was a waste of time to present this statement as it was merely a summarised cash book. Others were of the opinion that it could be useful but didnt quite know how they would use it. The structure of the statement of cash flows also came into question with one of the directors suggesting that we merely needed to get a printout of the cash account and attach it. Another said that we couldnt just do that as we needed to show operating, instigating and financing cash flows in the statement. Could you please clarify this matter for us? Answer: Correction of error in the financial statements: As per the requirements of the ASC 250, Accounting Changes and Error Corrections, any correction in the errors that have taken place during the previous year will not be considered to be the change in accounting. But reporting the correction of an error that has taken place during any of the previous year have to be included in the financial statements retrospectively.(IAS, 2015) The section 2500 is concerned with the changes in the accounting and the correction of errors. The Internal accounting standard number 8 deals with the changes in the accounting estimates. Also, IAS 8.36 specifies that any change shall be charged to the income and expenditure account and the effect for all the previous years will take place in the income and expenditure statement of the current year.(IFRS,2015) As per ASC 250, requires that the changes in the prior periods financial statements would only and only be made when it is not impossible to determine the specific effects of the changes in the prior periods and then, if this is the case, then the concerned codification requires the application of the new principles of accounting to the balance of the assets and the liabilities.(EY, 2015) When an error is corrected, the following conditions have to be met so as to restate the financial statements of the prior periods: 1. Showing the cumulative effects of all the periods that are prior as against those that were there during the beginning of the first period 2. Offsetting of the opening balances of the retained earnings account 3. Adjustments in the prior periods financial statements.(Boundless,2015) Hence, keeping in mind the facts and the circumstances of the given case, the life of the equipment will be changed and the amount that has been wrongly changed to the repairs and maintenance account and charged in the income and expenditure statement. The value of the equipment shall be added to it and depreciation shall be subtracted from the same. Accounting of the long service expense: As per the AASB 30, accounting for the employee benefits and entitlements, the liabilities that are incurred in respect of the following are necessarily required to be expensed in the income and expenditure account: 1. Wages and salaries, annual leave and the sick leaves without considering the fact whether they have to be settled within the period of 6 months or not. 2. The other employee benefits and the entitlements that are expected to be settled within the period of 12 months and whether they will be measured at their nominal values. All the employees entitlements shall be measured at the present value of the estimated future cash flows. The amounts have to be paid to the employees for the services that have been rendered by them to the employer.(ACE. NSW, 2015) As per the AASB 119, any liability that is due and is scheduled to be paid within the next 12 months should be measured on the nominal basis.(DHHS, 2015) All the expenses that are incurred during the regular course of the business are required to be included in the income and expenditure and the same have to be aggregated as against the revenues of the same period. Importance of cash flow statement: A cash flow statement deals with the various inflows and the outflows of the cash that takes place during the year. The following are the reasons due to which the cash flow statement is important: 1. It helps in ascertaining the cash position of the company. If the company has the positive cash flows, only then, will the company be able to meet its liabilities. 2. This statement helps in ascertaining the various inflows and the outflows of the money in respect of a project 3. When the information has to be reported to the manager and the shareholders along with the creditor. This statement becomes necessary to be reproduced. 4. The company could go on to be low on cash even when it is earning losses since a huge amount of money may have been tied up in accounts receivables and inventory.(Boundless, 2015) 5. If the company has a huge outflow of money, then the statement will tell the owners the same since the owners would know after looking at it whether they are drawing too much cash from the business or not. 6. The preparation of a cash flow statement would lead the company avoid the bankruptcy. 7. The cash flow statement is divided into 3 parts and each of these parts will tell a different story altogether throwing light on the various flows of the cash. 8. The statement will tell the company about the various payment that have been made in respect of the loans and the interest on the loans.(SSH, CPA, 2015) 9. Cash flow statement will help the company in knowing the actual amount of cash that the company is holding and ensures that no default is made by the company in respect of loan repayments 10. When a loan is taken from the bank, the bank ascertains the cash flow position of the company. In case, the position of the company is not good, then no loan is given to the company. Also, if the company prepares a cash flow statement, it will know where the cash is flowing away and whether it will be able to pay off the loan in the future or not. Immigration to the United States and New Americans free essay sample

Immigration in the early 1900s had tremendous impacts on the civilizations in Europe and in the United States. Immigration in any country can affect the economy and society. Domestically, there can be detrimental effects on the economy caused by the increasing number of immigrants. Also, nationally there have been problems in society with immigrants. But there are other views on immigration, stating that multiculturalism is increased and it strengthens society. Immigration has many different effects on a country, some good and some bad. Therefore, one may argue whether immigration has negative or positive effects within a country. Immigration has effected the United States socially and economically, significantly in the late 1900s some of the effects for the good and some for bad. Americans’ standard ways of thinking contain worries that the large numbers of immigrants are affecting the economy. In the source â€Å"The Case Against Immigration† Roy H. Beck states â€Å"an honest look at major trends during the recent mass immigration shows that ordinary Americans’ concerns can hardly be dismissed as narrow and unenlightened. We will write a custom essay sample on Immigration to the United States and New Americans or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page †1 He is stating that with the recent incline of immigration, people are not going to change their views on what they think of immigration. The large increase in immigration started in the 1970s and since then there has been a 5.6% increase in the total percentage of immigrants that make up the population in the year 2000.2 The recent incline in immigration has had significant negative effects in the economy. Many citizens believe that the large number of immigrants is conflicting with the job market. In source 98, Roy Beck states that the majority of people suffering from immigration are â€Å"poor children, lower skilled workers, residents of declining urban communities, and large numbers of African Americans.†3 These people are affected by immigration because of job competition. With more immigrants competing for the same jobs as the people effected, it diminishes the opportunities for citizens of the United States to get jobs at the wages they want. The group of people affected by immigrants makes up a large portion of the population. The text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† backs up the statement made by Beck with a statement about unskilled workers. It states, â€Å"many immigrants are unskilled laborers, the strong presumption is that immigrants are substitutes for domestic unskilled labor. Therefore, an increase in the number of immigrants will generally decrease the wages of  domestic unskilled workers.†4 This shows that immigrants are affecting many Americans that are unskilled workers, and with the large amounts of immigrants there is a much greater effect. The theory is simple but it is proven with statistics from the text. The text proves that immigrants are having effects on Americans. From 1970 to 1990 there was a large increase in population. The competition for jobs also went up. Native born citizens that are unskilled workers had their wages increased from $37,212 in 1970 to $37,551 in 1990.5 We must take inflation into account too. If the wages were not affected by immigration, we would have expected them to increase more significantly due to inflation. Over 20 years the wages only increased by about $300, this shows a direct relation between the number of immigrants and the salaries of native citizens. Many citizens believe that immigration has different effects on a nation. According to Paul Scheffer â€Å"world wide migration produces multifarious societies, then there is little to be said against it.†6 He also states that society must â€Å"create space† for everyone. He is saying that society does not have to adopt the traditions and beliefs of immigrants; we just need to accept that they are present and we must share the community with those of other cultures. It may cause problems if we are forced to make room for immigrants because not everyone believes in the traditions of other cultures. Those who have strong nationalistic beliefs usually have the most conflict. One who takes pride in the traditions of their country may not agree with an immigrants view. This can lead to corruption in a community. In the source â€Å"The Stasi Report† there is a scenario that displays the negative effects on a society by different cultural views. The source states, â€Å"wearing this symbol of their religious affiliation disrupted instruction and violated the cherished French principle of secularity.†7 This is a key example in showing how people cannot simply â€Å"make room† for those of different cultures because not everyone in a community agrees with their tradition and beliefs. The text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† states that as Hispanic and Asian immigrants improve their economic well being, they tend to move to better areas. Where African Americans â€Å"even is the have higher economic status- have continued to live in segregated neighborhoods.†8 This can show that there is a cause in discrimination against certain groups because of their choice to segregate  themselves. As they segregate themselves it causes a barrier with other ethnic groups. But as the new generations form, there is less segregation. Immigration is a leading problem in the segregation by choice. Not all opinions in an economical standpoint on immigration are negative. In source 98, Roy Beck states that that there are people who benefit from immigrants. He states the people that benefits are â€Å"business owners who have followed a low-wage labor strategy. Land developers, real estate agents, home mortgage officials, and others who tend to profit from population growth are winners.†9 This is stating that with the mass amounts of new immigrants, there is a large demand for housing. All of the jobs Beck lists are jobs that benefit from larger populations. In the text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† there is proof that there can be benefits from immigration. The text states â€Å"Immigration increases the supply of labor in the economy. More labor means more goods and services being produced so that national output rises.†10(137) The author is saying that goods can be produced more cost efficiently because the immigrants are willing to work at a lower rate than the citizens. When there are low wage labor strategies being implemented it helps the economy because producing products will cost less. Without immigrants offering to work for low wages, there would be a lot less workers in big production companies. With fewer workers there will be a smaller output on goods, which causes the price of goods to increase. Immigrants can affect the economy in positive ways as well. Socially immigrants have positive influence in a community. In source 99, Scheffer states that multiculturalists have a viewpoint that â€Å"immigrants enriched and strengthened society.†11 Immigrants have had many cultural influences that citizens have adopted. For example in the United States there has been an accumulation of different types of food, music, dancing, and many more things. These influences have been significant parts of most of our everyday lives. Immigrants bring education and talent to America. In the text â€Å"The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration† there is reference to the many awards that immigrants have received in the United States. The text states that â€Å"the percentage of U.S.  prizewinners who are immigrants includes 26 percent for chemistry, 32 percent for physics 31 percent for physiology or medicine, 31 percent for economics, and, perhaps surprisingly, 27 percent for literature.†12 This shows that there should be no stereotypes in society against immigrants because many have achieved greatness in this country. There are many influences on countries immigrants have settled in. Immigrants provide benefits and disadvantages to cultures and economies. Immigrants cause competition for jobs with many citizens; they also cause conflict with those who do not agree with their culture. They also have positive influences, they provide low costing labor rates, and they help provide cultural diffusion that allows us to be more diverse as humans. Depending on the way one looks at the influences, they may have a complete different opinion than someone else on how immigrants affect a community or on a larger scale, a whole country.

Environmental Studies and Forestry Research Paper Writing How-to Tips and Tricks for College Students

Environmental Studies and Forestry Research Paper Writing How-to Tips and Tricks for College Students Introduction to the Topic The research paper is an independent student work experience. At the same time, students of higher education institutions often perceive this activity as problematic, as they overestimate its complexity. However, the study of the algorithm for writing such a paper is an interesting and cognitive process, as well as work that allows determining the possibility of creativity in writing and design. In the course of studying this recommendation, you will understand that working on the research paper cannot deviate from generally accepted rules, and creative approach is welcome within reasonable limits in case of the first experience of its writing. Also, work in this area allows students to learn how to use additional literature and systematize the selected material. So, you definitely should not be afraid of writing the research paper. Nevertheless, you have to follow certain rules. What Is the Environmental Studies and Forestry Research Paper? Research activity is a scientific work related to scientific studies, conducting research, experiments in order to expand existing knowledge and obtain new information, test scientific hypotheses, and identify patterns, scientific generalizations, and justifications for the materials of the relevant discipline. In this regard, environmental studies and forestry research paper is an independent study of a student that reveals his/her knowledge and ability to apply it to solve specific practical problems. The paper should be logically completed and demonstrate the ability of the learner to articulate his/her thoughts clearly, argue the sentences, and use the terminology correctly. Of course, such a research paper is simpler than the work of real scientists. However, in terms of structure, methods used, and the planning system, it is actually a scientific study. The knowledge gained by the student during his/her own research is much better remembered. The method when a professor and a student set themselves questions explored by the discoverers of patterns in various sciences and seek answers together draws more students’ attention and forms their desire to engage in research activities in the future. In this regard, the objectives of the environmental studies and forestry research paper include the following: the acquisition of the skill to plan one’s own activities; the manifestation of the initiative; the ability to adhere to the chosen research question; development of analytical abilities of the student; the acquisition of assessment skills; the ability to formulate and express one’s thoughts clearly. So, writing the research paper is a complex task, the purpose of which is to illuminate or prove an interesting question or hypothesis, as well as to gain the necessary experience. Tips on Preliminary Notes to Get the Job Done Effectively and Efficiently This advice may not be timely, but you should be aware of what the preliminary notes are and how they can help the student at the time of writing research papers and other assignments. It should start with the fact that each of you in the process of learning writes down lectures that set out the theory fully or briefly (depending on the professors desire). At the end of the course, you have quite a heavy notebook. It is difficult to re-read such a work fully once again and isolate the required information from it. In this case, preliminary notes are used. They are a kind of summary of the studied material which you write briefly with highlighting its key points only. That is, a 30-page section of lectures can be reduced to five sentences, in which you indicate the main points of view on the topic and conclusions from it, and write down the questions that interested you. It is a kind of working journal magazine that will help you to navigate topics easily. In this regard, it is possible to voice the advantages of preliminary notes as follows: They are much shorter than lectures and do not take a lot of time to write. You can describe the entire lecture with several memorable sentences. Preliminary notes indicate only key information or conclusions (including yours). In preliminary notes, it is desirable (and sometimes necessary) to indicate your personal opinion about what you heard and to fix your own ideas, as they will become the basis for writing the environmental studies and forestry research paper in the future. Preliminary notes will help you to focus on interesting topics that you plan to develop in the future. For example, you are studying the topic of forestry reform. In the process of obtaining the material, you stumbled upon the question of the formation of forest ecosystems. Fix it in the preliminary notes. The next topic, for example, concerns ecological balance. You may well note the key points of this material, and the question that interests you will be enhanced. For example, you will be interested in studying and analyzing the impact of forest ecosystems on forest restoration. Not the fact that you are using this particular issue in your research paper. However, as far as the preliminary notes are kept, you will accumulate many similar topics and will certainly be able to choose one of them. ‘How do I make preliminary notes?’ Always carry around writing tools such as a notepad, a journal, a laptop computer, and so on. Do not mix lecture notes with preliminary notes keep them separately. It is advisable to take notes by the end of the lesson when the topic becomes clear. It is desirable to record them regularly, without missing a topic. Selecting a Topic for the Environmental Studies and Forestry Research Paper: A Few Tips from Our Writers The research work begins with the desire to deal with the specific question. You need to understand what influence the research will have and whether it will bring benefit in the future activity, and realize the strengths of you as a researcher in the chosen direction. A good topic for the environmental studies and forestry research paper is the sphere that is interesting to you. Formulate it correctly. The topic should be formulated properly, narrow, and clear. In this regard, the choice of the theme of the research paper is determined by the subjects of the studied areas, the research interests of the student, and his/her prospective specialization in the future. The topic can be subsequently deployed to a large research project. The choice of the topic for the research paper depends on preliminary notes largely. They can help you to find out what exactly you were interested the most in the framework of environmental studies and forestry, and what areas you would like to consider and develop. Always think ahead. Probably, you will continue this research paper in the future at a deeper level. Example of Choosing a Topic for the Environment Project For example, you studied the following topics throughout the course: Ecology and Environmental Balance; Ecological Nomenclature of Forest Management; Importance of Forest Ecosystems in the National Economy; Rational Use of Forest Resources; Environmental Problems in Forestry, and so on. After a short review of these topics with the help of preliminary notes (or lectures), you need to consider the questions or issues of your interest. For example, your notes have the following entries: What are the ways to influence the ecological balance? I should study the legislation regulating forestry activities in more detail. What functions are inherent in forest ecosystems in order to use them to improve the efficiency of forestry? What modern technologies for increasing the efficiency of using forest resources exist? Can the forest itself recover and what conditions are necessary for this? Then, there are purely technical moments. You need to choose something that relates to the official materials passed, which would also affect the topic interesting to you. Examples of topics for the environmental studies and forestry research paper, in this case, are the following: The Benefit and Harm of Human Intervention in the Artificial Creation of Ecological Conditions for the Regeneration of Forests; The Effectiveness of Legislative Acts Regulating Environmental Activities in the Use of Forest Resources; The Benefit of Waste-Free Ecological Technologies of Wood Processing for Environmental Balance; Conditions for Self-Revival of Forestry. Key Points of the Environmental Studies and Forestry Research Paper While writing the environmental studies and forestry research paper, it is necessary to adhere to a certain structure: Introduction. In this section, the author of the research paper should provide the reader with an idea of the topic, describe its relevance, problems, and the need for research. An important part of it is the construction of a hypothesis. For this purpose, you need to formulate a scientific assumption that requires verification, theoretical justification, or confirmation. The key research hypothesis should come up from the formulation of the research topic. For example, non-waste technologies of wood processing contribute to minimizing the negative human impact on forestry and stimulate the natural regeneration of forests to a large extent. Background. In this part, you may briefly describe the historical information or general theoretical data that has led to the occurrence of the problem (question) under study. Literature review. It is an obligatory part of any environmental studies and forestry research paper. You will not be able to conduct a full study based on your own experience only, even if you conduct a field experiment that proves or confirms your hypothesis. For this reason, you need to refer to authoritative authors who studied and addressed the topic directly or indirectly. Methods and materials. To ensure your research paper complies with the norms of writing research projects, you must specify how exactly you investigated your question. Any research project must necessarily include a practical part, for example, surveys, interviews, or statistical analysis, on the basis of which you support the hypothesis. So, in this section, you must specify the tools that helped you conduct your experiments (observation, analysis, and so on). In particular, you must indicate whether your research is quantitative or qualitative; what methods of data collection and analysis you used; who were the participants, and in what way you interviewed them, and so on. Description of the research, and its practical part. It is the basic part of the research paper. In this section, you should describe the progress of the study and the observed characteristics. If the environmental studies and forestry research paper is based on a theoretical study, you should consistently describe the key points that support your thesis and provide full support to it. Results. In this section, you summarize the results, analyze them, and give conclusions for each outcome. Conclusions. The final part of the research paper, where you confirm the result of all the work. The conclusion must begin with a sentence that supports or refutes the stated thesis or hypothesis. Further, you may again describe the key points of the study, reduce them to one result, and describe it as well. Shortcomings and limitations. It is an additional section and depends on the requirements given by your instructors. In it, you can describe what problems you encountered in the process of writing the research paper, what limitations that you see, and what could contribute to reducing the reliability of the results. Directions for future research. This section is also optional. You may include topics that interest you (from preliminary notes), which, in your opinion, may be investigated in the future. However, these topics should necessarily overlap with the material that you have studied and continue the current paper in one way or another. List of references. In this section, you must provide references to the authors whose ideas you have used while writing your environmental studies and forestry research paper. Writing and Post-Writing Tips to be a Good Writer Before writing your research paper, collect all possible information on your topic; Develop a preliminary plan of action. It will help you to carry out work consistently; Do not hesitate to ask your instructor for help. His/her experience will help you to structure your paper properly; The paper should be divided into paragraphs and sections. This will improve its readability; Your environmental studies and forestry research paper should show your growth and development. That is, the material included in it should be more complex than that in the intermediate essays; Be sure to check your paper for errors. Bad spelling and grammar, the presence of incoherent sentences, or sharp transition from one topic to another will lead to a lower assessment. Most importantly, remember that there are no difficult research papers. If you conduct a thorough preparation for the study and follow the instructions, the writing process will be easy and 100% please you!

Critically discuss how speakers notions of both tellability and Essay

Critically discuss how speakers notions of both tellability and tellership (as defined by Ochs & Capps 2001) have been found to differ depending on their gender - Essay Example When there are many tellers, multiple narratives overlap, interact and create a comprehensive, new narrative. Sometimes, a narrative is defeated by a counter-narrative also (Ochs and Capps, 2001, 43). This concept can also be elaborated as; â€Å"tellability is related not only to the sensational nature of events but also to the significance of events for particular interlocutors and the way in which events are rhetorically shaped in narrative† (Ochs and Capps, 2001, 34). There have also been other definitions for tellability and tellership. Duranti (2006, 282) has said that â€Å"tellability refers to the significance of the narrated experience and the rhetorical style in which it is related.† He (2006, Duranti, 282) also added that some experience have high tellability and some have low. â€Å"Experience recounted as highly reportable (and) in a compelling manner† is considered as highly tellable and â€Å"experience recounted as moderately reportable and in an uncompelling manner† is evaluated as having low tellability (Duranti, 2006, 282). Tellability has bee n defined by Herman (2009, 382), by drawing ideas from many other scholars (Herman 2002; Labov 1972; Waletzky 1969; Norrick 2007; Prince 1987; Ryan 1991), as â€Å"that which makes an event or configuration of events relevantly reportable†¦ in a given communication situation†. Another simple definition for tellability is that when we say â€Å"stories need to have tellability†¦.they need to have a point† to make† (from Male Narrative pdf that you gave [Author’s name is needed here, you have not given me the name], 21). There are two conflicting factors in a narrative, according to Ochs and Capps (2001,24). They are, â€Å"narrators’ yearning for coherence of life experience and their yearning for authenticity† (Ochs and Capps, 2001, 24). A woman’s narrative always tend to favor coherence of life experience even at the cost

Technology Makes the World Smaller Essay Example for Free

Technology Makes the World Smaller Essay Technology Make the World Smaller Office 2004 Test Drive User Table of Contents Commerce 4 Dell6 Ebay 7 E-cash8 Work Cited11 Footnotes12 Technology Makes the World Smaller The international marketplace is changing very fast every day. E-commerce and E-Business is now one of the standard ways to do business. The Internet has opened up vast opportunities for business to tap into new markets all over the world. The use of the Internet removes all geographical constraints, permits the instant establishment of virtual branches throughout the world, and allows direct and immediate foreign market entry to the smallest of businesses to the biggest. As the economy is becoming more global in nature, companies are handling more business on an international level. When comparing traditional business to e-business, one can see several differences between the two. The most obvious difference when buying standard goods such as a computer or Clothes is the store. When dealing with e-business there is no real store or merchandise to look at. It is all presented through the merchants webpage, or by other electronic means. You will not be able to touch, or feel potential purchases. All you will have to go on is perhaps a picture and a brief description of the item on your computer screen. This is obviously a big change from traditional store where you can walk in physically touch what you plan to purchase. There are several reasons why e-business is appealing to a lot of people. E-business is based on the internet. If you are using the internet, you are not bound by geography. You can access any site, anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own chair. Now the consumer has access to several things they didnt before. Same goes for any type of business on the Web. The consumer and different business now has variety. With the entire internet at your fingers, in a matter of minutes you can browse several stores in several parts of the world without even leaving the comfort of your own home. This allows you to compare prices and products off of different site. With e-business you are not restricted to the prices and products of your local stores. You can easily choose the best price or the best product. You have probably read all of the news stories about the shift to e-commerce and the hype that has developed around e-commerce companies. And you may have actually purchased something on the web, so you have direct personal experience with e-commerce. Still, you may feel like you dont understand e-commerce at all so lets start with the basics. Commerce Before we get into a complete discussion of e-commerce, it is helpful to have a good mental image of plain old commerce first. If you understand commerce, then e-commerce is an easy extension. Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary defines commerce as follows: com. merce n [MF, fr. L commercium, fr. com- + merc-, merx merchandise] (1537) 1: social intercourse: interchange of ideas, opinions, or sentiments 2: the exchange or buying and selling of commodities on a large scale involving transportation from place to place 3: sexual intercourse So commerce is, quite simply, the exchange of goods and services, usually for money. You can see that at this high level, commerce is a fairly simple concept. Whether it is something as simple as a person making and selling hotdogs on a street corner or as complex as a Doctor performing heart surgery, all of commerce at its simplest level relies on buyers, sellers and producers. So electronic commerce is just exchange of money for goods and services via electronic means. In other words, electronic commerce is usually when you purchase something off of the Internet. It is often referred to as e-commerce, or e-business. The Internet has revolutionized the businesses of today. Instead of having physical stores, companies can sell their products right off of the Web. To understand it a bit, lets take a look at one of the most successful e-commerce companies Dell. Dell Dell provides a range of technology products, including mobility products, desktop personal computers, software and peripherals, servers and networking, and storage products. Co. s services offerings include infrastructure technology, consulting and applications, and business process services. Co. also provides a range of financing alternatives, asset management services, and other customer financial services for business and consumer customers. Co. s customers include corporate, government, healthcare, and education accounts. Co. conducts its businesses through four reportable segments: Large Enterprise; Public; Small and Medium Business; and Consumer. Dell is a straightforward company that, like Gateway 2000, and a host of others, sells custom configured PCs to consumers and businesses around the world. Dell started as a mail order company that advertised in the back of magazines and sold their computers over the phone. Like the book Direct from Dell explains â€Å"Dells WebPages have enabled Dell computers to reduce their expenditures and become much more efficient in their production and distribution of their computers. Dells success at using the built to order system and internet has enabled them to become a much more efficient manufacturer of computers allowing Dell to maximize profits. Dells e-commerce presence is widely publicized these days because Dell is able to sell so much merchandise over the web. Dell currently sells something like $14,000,000 in equipment every day. 25% of Dells sales is over the web. Simplified e-commerce is what most small businesses and individuals are using to get into e-commerce. In this option the vendor provides a simplified system for creating your store. The system usually involves a set of forms that you fill out online. The vendors software then generates all of the web pages for the store for you. One good examples of this sort of offering is the website â€Å"Ebay†. EBAY Technology has allowed us to form international community with consumers. Not many company’s have done this as well as Ebay who was one of the first but more are popping up such as Amazon. There are very few companies in the world that are as recognizable as eBay. It is the online auction site and stands as one of the top online retailing stores in the world today. Hundreds of millions of people buy and sell merchandise through the eBay website. Few websites, if any, can drive the amount of traffic that eBay gets on an average day. What is more, virtually all of the people visiting eBay intend either to buy or sell goods and they can be neighbors or on opposites sides of the world. Because of this it is the perfect place on the internet to acquire or dispose of merchandise. The ability to display a products or services, and the ability to extend your business hours to 24-7 without a physical presence, and to update information which is seen by the world, immediately is very powerful in reaching global markets. Businesses can now use website like ebay and the internet breaks down logistical barriers, offering greater flexibility and power in the way they do business. It shrinks time and distance, simplifies complex business processes. E-cash Our textbook states that the biggest impact that will effect international business and global customers is E-retailing and financial services. They say the day is just around the corner where we will have â€Å"E-cash† which stands for electronic cash. With the example of prepaid smart cards we can see it’s not to far behind. Today you can buy one of these cards and use them for public calls and transportation and replacing cash. Once we see this type of payment option show up on the internet it will result in global digital cash and customers and business will be able to work on a 24-hr basis. Electronic cash systems offer vast opportunities for the consumer and business. In business transactions, electronic cash allows businesses to verify cash transactions instantly and to covert from one currency to another. This will be a big break through e-cash will be a currency without a country. In consumer to business transactions, it is easier for the customer because there is no need to carry physical currency, and transactions can be made over the internet instantly. EBay creates value by providing a very simple service. It brings people together. To the uninitiated, this may not seem like much. And yet, it is the foundation of a multibillion-dollar, multinational business empire that exerts an influence over the lives of millions of people. An advantage of any new technology as well as the internet is that it amplifies human potential. When electricity, the telephone, the automobile, and the airplane were invented they made the world more accessible to more people. Bussiness and people could now reech further distances. The internet can have the same revolutionary impact individuals and businesses can overcome geographical, cultural and logistical barriers and improve the way they live and work instantly. Because it amplifies our potential in so many ways, its possible that the long-term impact of the Internet could equal that of electricity, the automobile and the telephone. Disadvantages of the new technology and the internets is that it can make work portable. This will allow company’s to contract work overseas to save of coast. Resulting in people loosing jobs to low paid workers in other countries. In Conclusion the development of technology has greatly benefited mostly developed countries in which they were first launched, but because of the internet many other undeveloped countries are not to far behind. The power of the internet has now allowed for people to communicate regardless of where they are in the world weather it is your neighbor living twenty feet away, or some person totally across the world. An informal network of providers allows access to a limited number of free or low-cost drugs, mammography, treatment and other services. This network includes volunteer physicians on both sides of the border, the local federally funded community health center, the local Catholic hospital on the US side, the Shriner’s Hospital in Phoenix, hospitals in Tucson, the Mexican public social security hospital in Sonora, and the Santa Cruz County health department. The promotoras support the Santa Cruz County health department, doing home visits and translation on its behalf. When the county identifies diabetics, follow-up management is often handled by the promotoras. The promotoras have also been involved in a number of community issues. When the controversial replacement of a local well was proposed, promotoras and Institute-organized volunteers headed the county steering committee and organized door-to-door activities to advertise public meetings on the issue. Given their cross-border environment, the Institute has also fostered close working relationships with Mexican consular officials and municipal officials in Nogales, Sonora. The Institute has assisted Plan Retornowith donated supplies and health education. Plan Retorno helps deported individuals who have been dropped off in Nogales, Sonora far from their towns and villages of origin. The Way of the Heart model is different from what is more commonly seen in other promotora initiatives: It is a freestanding entity that has built a set of collaborative relationships with clinical providers and social agencies. Most other promotora projects appear to be sponsored by existing clinics and hospitals that use them to augment their outreach and patient management efforts. Staff Recruitment, Training and Retention Promotoras are recruited mainly through word of mouth, postings in community agencies and sometimes through newspaper ads. In the future, promotoras may be recruited from the teen promotora program that has developed out of the Institute’s peer counseling work. The program explicitly seeks promotoras who reflect the culture, economics and demographics of the Nogales community. Persistence and resilience in navigating systems are the most sought after attributes. health care disparities :: essays research papers An informal network of providers allows access to a limited number of free or low-cost drugs, mammography, treatment and other services. We have a husband who is a doctor and a wife that is an attorney that shows examples of what living in America is like from a educational point of view versus just what a sterotypical black family life would be. The Cosby Show focuses on what it is like to be pregnant and go through labor and delivery pains in dealing with real life situations. The show also focuses on a happy married life and the problems that can arise within a family. I never knew how smooth jazz could be until I had seen an episode of the Cosby Show. Going to college is a dream that most people try to achieve. Until I had watched the Cobsy Show I was never really informed on what it would be like to go to college. I never knew there were prominent black colleges and universities. I think that being able to have a good television show that shows real life examples of life is what helps make this a graet society to live in, the Cosby Show is that show. Once in a while the show highlighted musical guest usually jazz and blues artists. Three was an episode where BB King guest starred and showed America how he helped his guitar â€Å"Lucile†.
